nightmare for myself and my family. my mother has suffered as well as my children. i would like to get back to normal. >> reporter: investigators say the fbi found no evidence of ricin in a search of curtis' home. as curtis was being let negotiation the fbi was searching a second mississippi location. the tupelo home of a man named jay edward acquaintance of curtis. >> i had nothing to do with those letters. >> reporter: meanwhile, they say alarms went off the a mail facility at bowling air brace, indicating the presence of dangerous toxins. further tests showed no specific package but they're taking more samples. bottom line, an innocent man has been cleared and whoever is sending the letters may still be out there, matt. >> i'll take it. we have new details on the boston marathon bombings and what the tsarnaev brothers were doing in the months leading up to that attack.

nbc's jeff rossen is in boston with the story. jeff, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, savannah, good morning to you. lots to tell you about this morning. we want to begin with a milestone in the city of boston. overnight, they rye opened boylston street. we want to show you the site of the first bomb. this is where the first bomb went off. and as we zoom in as the cameraman does here, you can see on the left, the orange cones marked off by the cope, it's an eerie sight, watching people walk to morning this morning, right around them. some of them taking photos. we also have new developments in the investigation. fbi have fanned out around the world from here in the u.s. to russia where they're interviewing the suspects' parents. and we're learning much more about the suspects, closing if on a motive and how they may have built those bombs.

just months before the bombings, tamerlan tsarnaev shop here at this fireworks store in new hampshire. the store owner said he purchased these large lock and load mortar kits. 48 fireworks in all. what was his demeanor when he bought this? >> just a normal everyday customer. he wasn't overly friendly or rude. >> reporter: from his hospital bed, bombing suspect dzhokhar is filling in the blanks saying they learned how to make a bomb from the internet. dzhokhar told investigators he and his brother acted alone and offered a motive, too. the brothers believe the u.s. wars in iraq and afghanistan were an attack on islam. the day after the boston attack, dzhokhar spoke with college friends at the gym. >> i talked to him about how it was crazy that we had a bombing in boston. >> you said that, you talked about the bombing?

>> yes, i said it's a real tragedy that it's happened in afghanistan and around the world. >> reporter: meanwhile, tamerlan's wife katie lives in seclusion at her parents' home in rhode island. >> the reports of violence by her husband and brother-in-law came as an absolute shock to me all. >> reporter: and the victims' families continue to mourn. funerals for slain m.i.t. officer sean collier and 8-year-old martin richard whose family held a private service. saying in a statement, we laid our son mart ton rest. and now he is at peace. city and state officials have created a charity for the victim. it's called the one fund. so far, they have raised $20 million and counting. savannah, another critical day in the investigation going forward. investigators now analyzing

phone calls event mails from the suspect. trying to verify the younger brother's story that they acted alone. >> thank you. let's get to justice correspondent pete williams following the investigation from the investigative ends. pete, good morning. let me try to track down one thing that's been in some newspapers, and that is, these suspects may have been intent on traveling to new york. what do you know about that? >> i think that's been pretty well discounted by now. it's based on a statement made with the owner of the car that was carjacked. he told investigators that most of the time the two brothers spoke a foreign language. they said, well, did you understand anything they said. he said, yes, i thought they said the word manhattan. how many people say i'm going to manhattan. people say i'm going to new york. he didn't really understand what they were saying unless they were speaking english. it's certainly something to be considered that day. that's why they stopped a train that they thought he might have been on. i think by now, they discounted it. >> meanwhile, on capitol hill,

lawmaker has a closed-door meeting about the investigation. a lot of senators came out expressing concerns that potentially agencies were not sharing information with regard to tamerlan's trip to russia in 2012. is this another case, where as we saw after 9/11, there's concern that agencies weren't another? >> well, the fbi insists that they were contacted about tamerlan tsarnaev once in early 2011 by the russian intelligence service which said it had reason to believe that he was becominging a follower of radical islam. agents checked the u.s. terrorism databases, they were looking for such things as contact with suspected terrorists. then they interviewed him and members of his family and found nothing negative. officials said they asked the fbi for more information and never got a response. so they say that was the only contact from the russians. when a foreign government indicates concern about a u.s. person, when that person is checked out and nothing negative

is found, should the case be closed? or should it create some yellow flag in the system? should that person be on some kind of watch list, so if future questions arise or future travel plans are known, that person's state tuesday can be rechecked. >> an issue for lawmakers to grapple with in the coming days. pete williams in washington. thank you. for more on the attack and special ans, a superb "date line" right here on nbc. floodwaters rising to record levels in part of the midwest and more rain add to get misery. nbc's kevin tibbles is in hard-hit peoria, illinois. kevin, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. a citizen's army lined up here in illinois, the mississippi river and elsewhere, all battling to hold the historic high waters back. homes under water in peoria, has the swollen illinois river crests at record levels.

>> we're amazed at the power of the water. >> reporter: the city's popular riverfront has been completely consumed by the river. >> this is probably the highest the river's ever been. >> reporter: and dozen of peoria businesses have been swamped. take a look at one neighborhood on higher ground. homes perched precariously after a series of landslides. >> we only had a short time to get out. >> reporter: several roads remain closed in the st. louis area. in clarksville, residents are stepping up sandbagging efforts. block after block piled with waterlogged belongings. >> you take a look around, it's like a war zone. >> reporter: some like rebecca had to flee by boat. >> there's fish even in her basement. >> reporter: in fargo, north dakota, more than 500 semis hit the streets, loaded with sandbags.

back here in peoria, david lahood vows to rebuild. >> it's just a house. we're just glad it's not floating away. >> reporter: this part of the country was in extreme drought this time last year, now, many farmers with all this water are starting to ask what's going to be happening to their crops this year. >> thank you. the fbi is now investigating the high-profile hacking of the associated press' twitter account. a fake message was posted claiming there was an attack on the white house and it caused a brief and costly panic on wall street. nbc's white house correspondent peter alexander has details on this. peter, good morning. >> savannah, good morning to you. the ap twitter account is still suspended this morning because the bogus tweet actually dealt with the president, the secret service tells us it's monitoring the situation as well. there are more than 140 million accounts in the u.s. alone. and twitter has proven to be both an incredible tool for information. but as we learned once again, it's also a venue vulnerable to

cyberattack. >> reporter: what a difference 140 characters makes. or in this case, just 71. the tweet from the associated press tuesday afternoon read if the breaking: two explosions in the white house and barack obama is injured." of course, it wasn't true. the ap quickly announced that it had been hacked. >> everybody please have a seat. >> reporter: and there was the president in the rose garden an hour later. but then, the message had ricocheted through the twitter-verse, even taking an immediate to on wall street. >> market has fallen apart a bill lit. >> reporter: within three minutes the dow dropped 140 points. before gaining it all back. the ap is in good company. cbs' "60 minutes" account is still suspended after being hacked last weekend. npr just days earlier. twitter is accelerated for its speed and accessibility and even credited for fueling revolutions in the middle east.

but it's also become what some say is the world's most powerful rumor mill. before the tsarnaev brothers were id'd in the bombing thousands on twitter had blamed two innocent men. >> people are blaming, passing it along without thinking what they would do in real life. in to wit, unclick away and that's how rumors become viral like computer viruses do. >> reporter: an era of misinformation, with potentially serious consequences. so who's behind the latest hackings. the solid syrian. they've claimed it for the ap and other hacks. you can imagine they're revisiting their own social media policies to make sure they're not the next. >> we hope so. peter alexander in washington. we turn to natalie following tragic building collapse.

>> this happened in bangladesh that apparently has killed 70 people. the eight-story building was the site of several garment factories. officials do expect the death toll may rise. air travel is getting smoother across much of the country but the government is warning passengers that furloughs of air traffic controllers could still cause more delays. those furloughs were caused by budget cuts and airlines and members of corning now you calling for the faa to find other ways to slash spending. u.s. justice department has filed a formal explain aens language armstrong. violated $17 million contract with the u.s. postal service. over the course of seven years. armstrong's attorneys called the complaint sincere and fired back saying that the usps benefited enormously by sponsoring him. protests in france turned

transmit an astonishing 6 billion text messages. and in january, aaa reported nearly 35% of drivers admitted to reading a text or e-mail while driving in the past month. 26% admitted to typing while driving. now. the department of transportation is asking automakers for help. to install technology that limits the time a driver must take his or her eyes off the road to two seconds at a time, 12 seconds in a total, by disabling text messaging, web surfing, and video phoning while the car is moving. >> we're not mandating it, but we're saying if you do this, we think it will save lives. >> reporter: meanwhile, another study out from texas a&m finds that voice-activating texting, where the user dictates a text message, rather than types it in manually, is no safer than manual texting. >> what we found was is that the response times were about two times slower, no matter which texting method was used. >> my whole, my dreams, my ambitions, they're taken -- i

it is 7:26. good morning, everybody. i'm jon kelley. caltrans expected to reveal new information about construction problems on the new span of that bay bridge. it's been more a than a month since the agency discovered 32 broken rods on the new span. still trying out how to fibs it. options will be discussed at a meeting later on this morning. fixing the rods not the only roadblock for the bridge's scheduled labor day opening.

crews keeping a close eye on another batch of rods manufactured two years off the faulty rods. officials say those rods will have to be strength tested as well. police in and sheriff's deputies on the lookout for this man. 42-year-old dmitry storm was last seen in monterey county april 17th where officers say he stole a gray mercedes, later found in palo alto. they believe he may have also stolen cars in marin, santa cruz and monterey counties happening in early april. rob mayeda tells us it's kind of cool. >> it is. fog and mists across the coast and fran as we get into the afternoon. it will fill back in as we head toward the evening. cooler day today. highs in the 60s in san

half hour with amanda knox speaking out about the death of her roommate, the legal drama that followed, and her years spent in an italian prison. it's a case that she says still haunts her today. here's nbc's kristen dahlgren. >> reporter: it's been a year and a half since amanda knox's tearful homecoming. >> what's important for me to say is just thank you to everyone. >> reporter: since then, she has said little else. but in an interview with "people" magazine on newsstands friday, the now 25-year-old opens up, saying, it never occurred to me that i would be considered a suspect. knox was an exchange student in italy, when her roommate, meredith kercher, was brutally murdered. knox and then boyfriend raffaele sollecito were accused, prosecutors painting knox as a vixen for cuddling with sollecito instead of crying. >> she says that there were all sorts of moments of heartbreak that we did not see, where she was weeping. >> reporter: in her new memoir, "waiting t ining to be heard," s

she wants to set the record straight. she tells "people," i am not a murderer, and describes her anguish during her four years in an italian prison. >> amanda describes her ordeal as being one where her privacy was invaded, where the guards were leering and touching and in her space. >> reporter: knox says she considered suicide and credits her family and sollecito with keeping her going. the two aren't together anymore, but she says they are close and talk often. knox is back in seattle, back in school, dating an old friend who wrote her letters in prison. she has no plans to go back to italy for a new trial and says she is often still paralyzed by fear and worries about kercher's family. saying her father thinks i'm the killer of his daughter and that's painful. i really hope they read my book. for "today," kristen dahlgren, nbc news, los angeles. >> interesting to hear from her. we'll take a turn now and get a check of the weather from al. >> savannah, thank you so much. we're hanging out here, all of

>> reporter: pain that only a mother's hug can comfort. >> i was literally five feet away from where the first bomb went off. i don't know how you can put a bomb there and look at the people around and know that you're going to kill them. i don't -- i don't understand it. >> reporter: victoria mcgrath's rescue was captured in this iconic image. >> thank you. >> reporter: on tuesday, victoria met the man who carried her to safe, firefighter jimmy plurd. >> you looked right at me, like, i'm so scared, and i'm like, we're out of here, i'm picking you up, and you're like, no. >> i thought there was going to be more bombings. >> reporter: also at tufts medical center, bruce mendelson, a bystander who ran towards the explosion, not away. >> you are smaller than i remember. >> he was the first to reach victoria, used a t-shirt to tie a tourniquet to her leg. >> the doctor told me that if you hadn't have done that, i would have died. you save midlife. otherwise i would have bled out,

because it hit the artery. >> wow. >> reporter: x-rays reveal a one-inch piece of schlep nehrap into victoria's leg. >> so a matter of centimeters. >> reporter: lisa sham bla was in a medical tent at the finish line when victoria was carried in. >> it's so good to see you. >> reporter: but the first to see her in that tent was tyler dodd. >> i can stand up. >> are you sure? >> yeah. >> reporter: in that tent, victoria was hysterical. >> just your voice, it's so calming. >> reporter: tyler then told her he had been hit by shrapnel in afghanistan. he promised she'd be okay. >> he wasn't a soldier in afghanistan, he wasn't in combat. >> reporter: so this is the little white lie that you embraced? >> yeah, i don't regret it. i don't regret him telling me that. >> reporter: through it all, the

meantime, the owner of a new hampshire fireworks store said that months before the attack, suspect tamerlan tsarnaev bought dozens of large, lock and load mortar kits. on tuesday, a funeral was held for 8-year-old bombing victim, martin richard, and today, vice president joe biden will attend a memorial service for m.i.t. police officer, sean collier, who was killed during the manhunt. an epic battle is being waged in the midwest, pitting sandbags against rising rivers. some 500 truckloads of sandbags arrived in fargo, north dakota, to help hold back the red river. but in peoria, the illinois river has already crested at record levels, flooding dozens of businesses and triggering mud slides that are now threatening homes. the fbi is investigating how hackers were able to compromise the associated press twitter accounts tuesday and send out a false tweet about a supposed attack on the white house. the fake message said there had been two explosions and that president obama had been injured. but once again, that was just a fake message.

for the challenges involved. and it is a humbling job, you know you're going to make some mistakes. you know that there are going to be times when you wish you could roll back the clock. >> have to ask you from the sublime to the ridiculous, mrs. obama slipped a little bit a couple weeks ago and accidentally referred to herself as a single mother. and i wonder, did you get a kick out of that, or were you consulting your freud textbook? >> you know, as somebody who has stumbled over my lines many times, you know, i tend to cut my wife or anybody some slack when it comes to just slips of the tongue. but there's no doubt that there have been times where michelle probably felt like a single mom. i know that before we got here, when we were still, when i was running for the u.s. senate, when i was running for president, there were times where i wouldn't see her for a week, and she was still working and having to look after the girls. so she definitely, i think,

have a conversation where someone isn't bury ied in their phone right now. >> absolutely. >> undivided intention is so vary. >> digital manners are so important. the first one, i am guilty of. i've done it many, many times, accidentally sending an e-mail or a text to the wrong person, the person you're say something about? >> yes. >> so in that scenario, what do you recommend you do? >> it's the worst. you kind of just have to own up to it, especially, i think it's really hard when you're just forwarding an e-mail, and sometimes you don't read all the way to the bottom to see who, what's being talked about. i think, you know, you either just have to call the person and say, i really screwed up, i'm so sorry. i think the worst thing you can do is just send one of those e-mail retractions, without doing anything, right? that's basically just saying, like, please, look at me! i messed up! you know, look at this e-mail. but i think just own up to it. >> just a nice, simple, great apology. >> and remember, you know, learning moment. if you wouldn't want it on the "today" show, don't put it in e-mail. >> words to live by.

you. >> go ahead, michael. do your next one. >> this is the one i'm really interested in. you're dating someone, it's new, how long is it -- how long is it before you start actually using text instead of calling the person? >> gosh, so many people ask a first date out via text now. it's kind of like the new thing. >> not okay? >>, you know, maybe for a first date, but i think if it goes well enough to want a second date, you pick up the phone and you call. because, you know, chivalry is the not dead in this world. >> and to michael's question, how much relationship discussing should you do over text? because tone is kind of lost. >> absolutely. >> right. i have generally three rules of when you take is a message from text to phone. the first is if you're giving like complicated directions or advice that needs to be explained. the next is if it starts getting a little emotional, and, you know, lost in translation over text. and the third is if it starts getting a little gossipy and you would never want that to actually be in writing. >> i'm in my 30s, and my wife is

in her 20s, and we see it completely differently. i see it's very cold, sometimes, to text. i want to talk to her, i want to have a conversation, and she loves the texting. >> i had a conversation yesterday, i was texting with a friend, and i feel the conversation got to a point where i should pick up and call, and they screened me. and i was like, i know you're on the other line. we're texting! >> slightly related, can we agree that breaking up via text -- >> not cool! >> horrible. >> you definitely owe someone at least the face to face. >> i gragree. >> your next scenario, if your child receives a negative text, how do you teach them to resist that urge to fire back right away or what would you advise? >> it's hard. when you see that negative thing, it's your first response, you want to defend yourself. you want to get back in there. but i think it's really important to kind of to take the digital high road, to take a breath. i usually, if i feel tempted to send an emotional e-mail, i always draft it, kind of send it to a friend -- >> that's a great way to do it.

>> who i know is going to write back and say, you know, do you feel better now that you wrote that? don't send it. >> and something that i did, the last time i was on the show, pocket dialing. what happens when you pocket dial -- which i did, i called my lawyer. i didn't mean to. >> you were probably charged $800 for that. >> and i said some probably some pretty terrible things. what is the best way to handle that? >> i think even now, even bigger than that is like pocket siri or pocket voice activation. you're sitting there and all of a sudden, it's like, what can i help you with? which is very awkward with. but if you actually pocket dial and inevitably, it's going to be someone you haven't spoken to in years, you kind of have to, you know, expect that they're going to text or call you back and then you kind of have to spend a few minutes talking to them. >> like you said, before, the apology. it's always about how you handle the situation. >> i have a 2-year-old son that i can blame it on. oh, he was just -- i'm sorry, he was playing a game. >> and the pocket tweet, where you don't tweet, i have done it

five muslim women come together to talk about their dieting struggles. but the group has become so much more than that. >> we were all a little nervous when we first got there, what is this going to be like? >> when we first started, it was muslim and jewish groups. >> and we, as participants, asked to have more opportunities the to talk to each other. >> and by the end of it, it was just a group of women. >> slim peace was founded in israel by documentary filmmaker, jael more than a year ago. the first group met, and initial tensions soon gave way to compassion and ultimately understanding. >> we're all people. it's a universal topic. it's a universal struggle, and we're more alike than we are different. >> in boston, the group is run by two nutritionists, one muslim, one jewish. they provide healthy eating tips and weekly weigh-ins.

we could do it with my white fish that is not fatty like tuna or salmon. it does really good. so the idea is to put some butter on the bass so it's very well-protected from the heat. it goes to the oven. when it comes back, it looks like that. so what we have here is the fish that is cooked. we're going to use what you have done here. >> how long did you bake the fish? >> the fish bakes about five, six minutes. and then you just have to plate. so to plate, we have the vegetables that you just filtered. so i put them here. it's just to look good. and the fish will go on the top, and the sauce, of course. >> this is a special recipe for you, isn't it? >> it's a family recipe, brings a lot of memories to me. and -- see, we're putting the sauce right here around it. >> beautiful. >> delicious. >> doesn't that smell great? >> and then you take it out. yeah, you can smell the saffron and garlic and onions, and then the fish goes on top, like that.

>> reporter: good morning, marla. we're getting ideas how they plan to repair the bolts bolts on the new span of the bay bridge. they narrowed it down to two options. they didn't pick one. they do say hydrogen was one of the problems that caused these bolts to fail in the first place. there's still a question of why the hydrogen was present. that's what we discussed with the hydrogen oversight committee. one is a steel collar that would hold a seismic device in place. option two is what they call a steel saddle. a contractor has placed a steel order for both of them. the fabricator is on the island. 280 high-strength steel rods. they were installed. in march, 32 of them broke under tension. that steel painted in 2008 and hydrogen made them too brittle. a second batch in 2010 held up. it held up for two weeks. the problem is they need to stand for decades.
